These instructions will make an 18 inch necklace. For a longer or shorter necklace, adjust the length of chain used at the ends of both sides of the necklace. Please be advised that you may need to buy an extra foot of chain to make the necklace longer.
- Begin by watching our video on how to glue a cabochon onto Lacy's Stiff Stuff for bead embroidery. Following what you learned in the video, glue the rose quartz oval cabochon onto the piece of Lacy's Stiff Stuff using E6000 glue. Set aside to dry overnight.
- Cut a length of Nymo thread as long as you are comfortable working with, and make an overhand knot at one end. Triple knot it for security. Thread a size 12 beading needle and sew up through the beading foundation near the cabochon.
- Next, watch our video on how to backstitch in bead embroidery. Backstitch one row of gold 11/0 seed beads around the cabochon.
- Now you will sew a peyote bezel around your cabochon, building on the backstitched row from the previous step. Sew up through one bead in your base row and add a gold seed bead to your needle. Skip one bead in the base row and sew through the next bead over, so the new bead is lying on top of the bead you skipped. Pick up another new seed bead and sew through the second bead over in the base row again. The process is similar to that shown in our video on how to weave a basic beaded bezel. Continue this process, adding a second-row bead above every other base row bead, until you've encircled the whole cabochon. Then weave a third row of beads using the pearl white 11/0 seed beads, adding a new bead between every bead in the second row. When you've surrounded the cabochon, sew back down through your beadwork and through the beading foundation.
- Next, backstitch one row of 4mm Austrian crystal pearls around your cabochon. You will need 22 pearl beads to encircle the cabochon.
- Backstitch another row of gold seed beads around the row of pearls from the previous step.
- Guide your needle down through the beading foundation about 1/4 inch from the edge, and make a knot as close to the underside of the foundation as you can. Triple knot it for security and cut off the excess thread with scissors.
- Now, watch our video on how to trim the foundation and attach backing. Following the technique shown in the video, carefully cut out your bead embroidered area from the sheet of Lacy's Stiff Stuff. Trim as close to the beadwork as you can while making sure not to cut any of your woven threads on the underside of the piece. Set your piece aside.
- Using flush cutters, cut five 1 1/2 inch pieces of gold 22 gauge wire. Take one length of wire and grip it gently at the midway point with round nose pliers. Bend the wire around one side of the pliers so it creates an open loop. Repeat this process with the other four pieces of wire, so you have five wire components bent in half with a loop at one end.
- Lay your bead embroidered focal piece face-down. Position two of the wire components from the previous step on either side of the underside of the piece near the top, so the loops protrude about 1/4 inch from the top edge of the piece. Glue them down with a thin layer of E6000. Then position the remaining three wire pieces so the loops are protruding from the bottom edge -- one in the middle and the last two evenly spaced on each side. See the photo for reference. Glue these in place with E6000 too.
- Add a few more dabs of E6000 to the underside of the embroidery piece, and then carefully flip it over and press it down onto your piece of white ultrasuede. Let dry overnight. Then cut the piece out of the ultrasuede using scissors.
- Cut and knot another length of Nymo thread, and watch our video on how to bead embroider a basic beaded edge. Begin edging your focal piece with gold seed beads, working your way around. When you get to a wire loop protruding from the piece, sew an edging bead in the middle, guiding your needle through the wire loop before sewing back through the bead, so the edging bead lays behind the loop.
- Once you've finished edging the piece, sew back down through the first edging bead and through the layers of the embroidery piece so your needle is coming out the back of the piece. Make a knot as close to the ultrasuede as you can, and triple knot it. Cut off the remaining thread with scissors. Set aside.
- Using flush cutters, cut three 5 inch pieces of gold 26 gauge wire.
- String one piece of wire through one blue chalcedony briolette. Watch our video on how to wire wrap a briolette. Wire wrap the chalcedony briolette, attaching the loop to one of the three wire loops protruding from the bottom of the embroidered focal. Repeat this step twice more, attaching two more briolettes to the remaining two wire loops at the bottom of the embroidery piece. Set aside.
- Cut ten 2 inch pieces of gold 22 gauge wire.
- Take one 2 inch piece of wire and make a simple wire loop on one end. String one Austrian crystal pearl, one rose quartz 6mm round bead, and one more Austrian crystal pearl. Make another simple wire loop. Repeat this step five more times, so you have six components with two pearls and one rose quartz bead.
- Take another 2 inch piece of wire and make a simple wire loop on one end. String one ceylon blue 11/0 seed bead, one Austrian crystal pearl, and one more blue seed bead. Make another simple wire loop. Repeat this step three more times, so you have four components with two blue seed beads and one pearl.
- Cut eight 1/2 inch pieces of gold chain.
- Take one wire component with a rose quartz bead and open the loop at one end, the same way you would open a jump ring. Slide on one of the two wire loops at the top of the bead embroidery piece, and close the loop.
- Open the loop at the other end of the component and slide on the first link of one of your 1/2 inch pieces of chain. Close the loop.
- Take one wire component with two blue seed beads and open the loop at one end. Slide on the last link of chain from the previous step. Close the loop.
- Open the loop at the other end of the component and slide on the first link of another 1/2 inch piece of chain. Close the loop.
- Take another wire component with a rose quartz bead and open the loop at one end. Slide on the last link of chain from the previous step. Close the loop.
- Repeat steps 21-24, so you have five beaded wire components, interspersed with four 1/2 pieces of chain.
- Repeat steps 20-25 on the other side of the necklace.
- Cut two 3 inch pieces of gold chain.
- Open the wire loop on one end of the necklace and slide on the first link of one 3 inch piece of chain. Close the loop. Repeat this step on the other side of the necklace with the second piece of chain.
- Open one jump ring. Slide on the last link of chain on one side of the necklace, and the loop of your clasp. Close the jump ring.
- Open another jump ring and attach it to the last link of chain on the other side of the necklace. All done!
