A prancing horse decorates this vintage style lucite cameo, ornately framed by rows of bead embroideredery. Antiqued connector link chain lends an equestrian feeling to the necklace; an ideal accessory for the avid horseback rider.

Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

These instructions will make a 21 inch necklace. For a longer or shorter necklace, choose your desired length of chain. Note: for a longer necklace, you may need to purchase more chain. We have created a series of videos that provide helpful visual instructions for each step of the bead embroidery process, so please refer to the links listed below. You will need to tie off and add more thread as you work.

Begin this project by watching the video: How to Glue a Cabochon for Bead Embroidery. Glue the cameo onto your Lacy's Stiff Stuff using E6000.
Next, watch the video: How to Backstitich in Bead Embroidery. Backstitch one row of 11/0 opal buttercream seed beads around the cameo, followed by one row of 11/0 matte grey seed beads.
Please watch the video: How to Create a Bezel Row in Bead Embroidery. Using black 15/0 seed beads, make a bezel row.
Please watch the video: How to Trim the Foundation and Attach the Backing. Do this for your bead embroidered cameo.
Please watch the video: How to Bead Embroider a Basic Beaded Edge. Sew on a beaded edge using 11/0 matte grey seed beads.
Now use flush cutters to cut 10 inches of chain.
To attach chain to your embroidered cameo: Cut 1 foot of Nymo and thread your needle. Leaving yourself a 4 inch tail, insert your needle through the back of the embroidered edge so that it comes through the front between your two outermost rows of beading, about 3/4 inch from the top center (see photo for reference). Thread on the end link of your chain, then loop your thread around your outermost matte grey beaded row. Send your needle back through your entry point to create a loop of Nymo around your chain link. Repeat this twice more to reinforce your attachment. Bring the two ends of your thread together in an overhand knot, then tie off and weave in your thread. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to attach chain to the other side of your cameo.
To attach the clasp: Use pliers to open a 4mm jump ring and slide on the end link of the chain on one side of your necklace. Also slide on the loop of your toggle bar. Close the jump ring. Repeat this step to attach the toggle ring on the opposite side of your necklace. Enjoy!
