Retired - Winged Things Dream Catcher

PROJECT C8002
Designer: Alexandra Smith
Skill Level: Intermediate
Creatures in flight hover with sparkling Austrian crystal and soft silk ribbon, adorning this springtime-themed dream catcher. The hoop is wrapped in a lilac shade of purple faux suede, and webbed with natural beige waxed linen.
Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

The hoop measures 4.5 inches in diameter, and the completed dream catcher hangs approximately 9.5 inches when strung from a 3 inch ribbon loop.
  1. Please watch the video:How to Make a Dream Catcher Hoop. Applying what you have learned in this video, use heavy gauge wire cutters to cut 16 inches of 16 gauge wire. Form a circle measuring 4.5 inches in diameter. Close the hoop by bringing the two ends of wire together and making a wrapped wire loop.
  2. Next, cut 5 feet of faux suede and wrap it all the way around the hoop as shown in the video.
  3. Using scissors, cut 6 feet of waxed linen cord and begin weaving the webbing inside the hoop as shown in the video. As you're working, be sure to add glue to all your waxed linen knots for security.
  4. Once you start the second layer of the weave, begin to add beads to each of the sections as follows: one aqua bead on sections 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9; and two purple beads, one crystal butterfly bead and two more purple beads in sections 2, 4, 6, and 8. Alternate this pattern all the way around the second layer of the weave.
  5. Continue the third layer of the weave without beads. As you weave, thread the cord between two of the purple beads and the crystal butterfly bead that you previously strung on the second layer of your weave, thus splitting the beads apart onto separate sides of the section onto which they are strung.
  6. Continue the fourth layer of the weave without beads.
  7. Once you start the fifth layer of the weave, begin to add one aqua bead and one purple bead to every other section of the fifth layer of the web moving inward.
  8. Continue the sixth and final layer of the weave without beads. As you weave, thread the cord between the aqua and purple beads that you previously strung on the fifth layer of your weave, thus splitting the beads apart onto separate sides of the section onto which they are strung.
  9. Complete the sixth layer of the weave, and tie it off with a square knot. Be sure to add glue to your end knot for security.
  10. Open a 5mm jump ring, string on your daisy charm, and link it to the top middle section of the innermost layer of the weave, so that it hangs down into the center of the web.
  11. When your dream catcher hoop and webbing are complete, please watch the video: How to Embellish a Dream Catcher Ornament. In this video, you will see suggestions for decorating your hoop with ribbons, charms, and crystal beads. Follow the instructions below (please see photo for reference), or create your own variation.
  12. Using scissors, cut five 6 inch lengths of waxed linen cord.
  13. Onto your first length of cord, string on one purple briolette and tie an overhand knot just above the bead. String on the fairy charm, and tie another overhand knot to secure the top loop of the charm 1/2 inch above the briolette. Then tie another overhand knot 1/4 inch up from the fairy, and string on one aqua bead and one purple bead. Tie the other end of the cord onto the left side of the hoop 1 inch up from the bottom center of the hoop.
  14. Onto your second length of cord, string on one crystalactite point and tie an overhand knot just above the bead. String on one aqua bead and one purple bead, and tie another overhand knot just above the purple bead. Then a knot 1/4 inch up from your previous one, and string on a purple bead and a crystal butterfly bead.
  15. Tie the other end of the cord onto the left side of the hoop 1/2 inch up from the bottom center of the hoop.
  16. Onto your third length of cord, string on the butterfly charm and secure the top loop with an overhand knot. Then string on one aqua bead and two purple beads, and tie another knot above the last purple bead. Then tie a knot 1/4 inch up, string on a purple bead and a crystal butterfly bead, and tie a knot just above the crystal butterfly bead. Tie another knot 1/4 inch up from there, and string on an aqua bead, a purple bead, a silver butterfly bead, a purple bead, and another aqua bead. Tie a knot just above your last bead. Tie the other end of the cord onto bottom center of the hoop.
  17. Repeat step 14 to add beads to your fourth length of cord, and tie the other end of the cord onto the right side of the hoop 1/2 inch up from the bottom center of the hoop.
  18. Onto your fifth length of cord, string on one purple briolette and tie an overhand knot just above the bead. String on one aqua bead, one purple bead, and one hummingbird bead. Tie a knot 1/4 inch up from the hummingbird bead, and string on one aqua bead and one purple bead, then tie a knot above the purple bead. Tie the other end of the cord onto the right side of the hoop 1 inch up from the bottom center of the hoop.
  19. Next, cut 4 three inch lengths of ribbon and tie them to the hoop between each length of strung dangles (please see photo for reference) using a lark's head knot.
  20. Finally, cut a 3 inch length of ribbon and loop it through the top wire wrap of your dream catcher, tie it off with an overhand knot, and clip the extra ribbon.
This project uses spring-themed elements, but feel free to incorporate your choice of colors and charms.
