If you are new to metal punching, you may want to watch our video:
Overview of Metal Punches for Jewelry Making. This necklace measures 16 1/4 inches total. To adjust the size, modify the length of chain purchased accordingly. In addition to the materials listed below, you will also need some disposable gloves and paper towels.
- Please watch our video demonstrating the metal punching technique: How to Metal Punch Bracelet Blanks and Use the EZ-Bender Tool. Refer to the instructions in the beginning of the video through the stamping of the letters. Once the video moves on to the metal bending, you do not need to finish watching for the purposes of this project.
- Using what you have learned in the video, begin by placing your stamping blank on your bench block with the round hole on the left hand side and the heart-shaped hole on the right.
- Take your 'X' letter punch and place it 1/8 inch from the round hole on the left side of your stamping blank. Follow the technique shown in the video to hammer the letter impression into the metal.
- Repeat the above step for each of the following letters to spell out 'XII MMX,' leaving a 1/8 inch space between the two roman numeral sets (see photo for reference). Also, refer to the video for suggestions on the spacing and placement of your letter punches to make sure you get straight, even lettering on your stamping blank.
- Once your letters are punched, put on your disposable gloves and apply some ImpressArt Stamp Enamel to the surface of the metal and use a paper towel to quickly wipe away the excess.
- To assemble your necklace, use flush cutters to cut two 7 inch lengths of gemstone wire wrapped chain so that each length begins and ends with a smoky quartz stone.
- Use pliers to open a 5mm jump ring. Slide on the end wrap of one length of gemstone chain. Also slide on one side of your stamping blank. Close the jump ring. Repeat this step to attach the other length of gemstone chain on the opposite side of your stamping blank.
- To attach the clasp, open the jump ring attached to the clasp. Slide it through the last wrap on one side of your gemstone chain, and also slide on the loop of your clasp. Close the jump ring.
- Open another jump ring. Slide on the last wrap of gemstone chain on the other side of your necklace. Close the jump ring. Enjoy your necklace!
