Retired - Tea Rose Earrings

PROJECT E687
Designer: Julie Bean
Skill Level: Intermediate
These pretty earrings are both charming and romantic. The color palette of rich brown, warm copper, dark green, and intense ruby lends a regal old world feel to the design and the sparkling Austrian crystal chatons really 'pop' against the dark background.

  1. Although it is for a different project, the video: How to Make a "Tuffet" Ring with Crystal Clay, Chatons, and a Bezel Ring might help you with this project if you are not familiar with how to mix Crystal Clay or place chatons into the clay.
  2. Begin by mixing up a small amount of dark brown Crystal Clay about the size of a blueberry. Roll this into a ball and place it in the center of your Nunn Design bezel. Smooth out the edges so that it becomes a dome in the bezel. Next place a copper metal rose bead into the center of the clay dome and press down so that half of the bead is fully submerged in the clay (and you can not see the holes). Smooth out your clay again so that the dome is just slightly bulging beneath the rose bead but is fairly uniform. See photo.
  3. Place Austrian crystal crystal chatons size pp10 in two rows circling the center rose bead. To do this, start with the row closest to the bezel edge, place the chatons into the clay, and try to line them up as close to each other as possible but do not let them touch. Once you have completed a full circle, make the next row which will be circling the rose bead. Let cure overnight, but while you are waiting, proceed to the next step.
  4. Mix up a very small amount of dark brown Crystal Clay about the size of a petite pea. Roll into a ball. Place onto one eye pin: 1 Austrian crystal crystal faux pearl, the Crystal Clay ball (just put the pin through the middle and slide down so it rests on the pearl), and a copper metal rose bead. Squish the beads together so that the clay looks like a thick ring between the two beads. Add chatons to the clay, alternating between large and small ones as you work your way around the clay ring. Let cure overnight. Make a simple wire loop after the metal rose bead and snip off excess wire with flush cutters.
  5. Open the loop at the base of your pearl from the dangle above and link it to the loop at the top of your clay filled bezel setting. Close the loop back up.
  6. Open the loop at the base of your earring hook and link it to the simple wire loop at the top of your dangle from the previous step. Close the loop.
  7. Mix up a very, very small amount of Crystal Clay and wrap it around the base of your earring hook between the loop and the curve of the earring, do not completely cover the loop, and smooth out the edges. Place a chaton into the clay in the front. See photo. Let cure overnight.
  8. All done! Enjoy!
