What is Pearl Knotting?
Pearl knotting, or just knotting, is a traditional jewelry making technique where instead of simply stringing your pearls on one after another, a tiny knot is made in between each pearl. This protects your pearls from rubbing against each other, and in case your strand ever breaks, it keeps your precious pearls from flying everywhere. The tiny knots in between each pearl also provide an extra design element, especially if you play with the color of your thread. Silk thread is traditionally used with pearl knotting because it has a beautiful drape, with silk being a luxurious material to pair with pearls.
How to Knot Pearls
Traditional pearl knotting is done using a pair of fine tipped tweezers or a beading awl. After sliding a pearl onto your stringing material, usually silk thread, make a loose knot, insert your tweezers or awl into the knot as close to your pearl as possible, and then tighten your knot down to your tweezer or awl tip. Pull out your tool and use it to slide the knot close to your pearl. Repeat with your next pearl bead. This method takes some practice. Specialized knotting tools are also available.
