Retired - Rosette Cluster Bracelet

PROJECT B8064
Designer: Alexandra Smith
Skill Level: Intermediate
Floral shades of pink and mauve intermingle in this kumihimo bracelet using the Victorian Rose 6/0 seed bead mix. The beads bloom in increments along a spiraled braid of S-lon cord, finished with a toggle clasp.
Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

These instructions will make a 7.75 inch bracelet, designed to fit a 6.5 inch wrist (we recommend adding approximately an inch to your desired length to compensate for the wider girth of the bracelet). To modify the size, adjust the length of braided portion accordingly. Note: You will also need some tape and a toothpick or scrap of wire to complete this project.
  1. Begin by watching our video on how to braid beaded kumihimo.
  2. Based on the technique shown in the video, cut four 3 foot lengths of each of the following colors of S-lon cord: brown and pink. Tie them together with an overhand knot at one end.
  3. String 25 Toho 6/0 seed beads from the Victorian Rose mix onto each of your 8 cords. You may want to reference this video showing how to use glue on cord to form a needle for easy stringing.
  4. Wind your threads onto the bobbins as shown in the video.
  5. Arrange the cords in your kumihimo disc in the following order: Two strands of brown on either side of the 32 dot at the top, two strands of brown on either side of the 16 dot at the bottom, two strands of pink on either side of the 24 dot at the left, and two strands of pink on either side of the 8 dot at the right. Attach your weight to the knot after you have positioned your cords.
  6. Begin braiding without beads for 1 inch.
  7. Then add beads to your braid and weave for 1 inch, using 5 beads per strand. You may want to watch this video on how to create kumihimo bead clusters.
  8. Continue braiding without beads for 1/2 inch.
  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 four more times for a total of five beaded clusters. Then braid without beads for 1 inch.
  10. Next. watch our video on how to tie off and finish kumihimo braid ends. Based on the tape technique shown in the video, cut a piece of Scotch tape and wrap it tightly around the unbraided section at one end of your bracelet, about 1/2 inch from the first beaded cluster. Cut through the taped part of the braid with scissors, leaving a total of about 3/4 inch of braiding on the end of your bracelet.
  11. Using a toothpick or scrap of wire, apply a dab of E6000 glue into the well of one cord end. Then tuck the taped end of the braid into the cord end.
  12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 to finish off the other end of the braid. Allow the glue to dry for at least one hour.
  13. Finally, use pliers to open a jump ring, and link the loop of one cord end onto one side of your toggle clasp. Close the jump ring. Repeat this step on the opposite side of your bracelet. All done!
