Isabella Collar Necklace

PROJECT N745
Designer: Julie Bean
Skill Level: Intermediate
This lovely necklace looks much like a piece dating from the Victorian era with its multitude of jet black beads woven together in an intricate pattern. Even the clasp is bead woven and true to the historical feel of the design.
Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

Please note that the necklace shown in the photo is approximately 13 inches long, a tight collar. Because of the nature of this design, you will need to add or subtract entire segments of bugle bead darts (see photo), which means you will be adjusting the length in 3/4" segments (if you want to make it longer or shorter). The video will talk about this in more detail as will the instructions below. Important Note: Make sure to measure your neck before beginning this project.
  1. Start by threading onto your beading needle as long of a length of Wildfire thread as you are comfortable working with. You will definitely need to tie off and add threads as you go. To see how to do this, please watch the video: How to Tie Off and Add New Thread in Bead Weaving.
  2. Next, please watch the video: How to Bead Weave the Isabella Collar Necklace. This video was created especially for this design and will show you how to make every part of the necklace except for the clasp.
  3. In the video, it will discuss how long of a row of right angle weave to start with to get your desired length. For the necklace photographed, which is 13 inches long, it has a base row of 59 units of right angle weave. This will allow you to then make 15 bugle bead dart segments (each consisting of 4 bugle beads). If you want a 13 3/4" necklace, then start with a base row of 63 units of right angle weave, conversely, if you want a 12 1/4" necklace, start with a base row of 55 units of right angle weave. Note: the clasp will add about half an inch and this has been accounted for in the numbers above.
  4. Watch the video and bead weave your necklace to the desired length. Note that in the video I made a necklace that is a little smaller then the one here in the instructions. I realized after the video was completed that the finished design would only fit someone with a very small neck so I made it a little bigger after the video was completed to be more widely appealing.
  5. The clasp on this necklace is a little beaded bead and loop. To see how to make the beaded bead, please watch the video: How to Make a Beaded Bead. Create a beaded bead using your Wildfire thread and Miyuki 11/0 Delicas in black.
  6. Once you have finished your beaded bead, watch the video How to Attach a Button and Loop Clasp to Your Bead Weaving. This video will show you how to attach the beaded bead to your beadwork and also how to make and attach the loop. Make your loop and attach your beaded bead.
  7. Enjoy!

So beautiful

I absolutely loved making this, I enjoyed every moment of it and would love make so many in different colours. The worst part is that I don't know how to finish the necklace (put on a clasp or make the beaded ball in the pictures which I really wanted to do) as that wasn't shown in the video. So my necklace that I made is still yet to be worn, but I love it.

Thank you for your feedback. Instructions for how to make the clasp for this necklace are found in steps #5 and #6.
