Jade Dragon Kumihimo Bracelet

Like the scales of a shimmering dragon, this Kumihimo bracelet is a green and gold spiral of Miyuki Long Magatama beads.
Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

You will also need a scrap of wire or toothpick for this project.
  1. To begin this project, please watch the video on How to Braid Beaded Kumihimo with Long Magatama Beads. This video shows how to make the braid portion of this bracelet. If you have never done Kumihimo before, please watch How to Braid Beaded Kumihimo and Make a Bracelet. This second video will show you how to load your beads onto your bobbins, set up your threads, and get started.
  2. For this bracelet, cut 8 lengths of Super-Lon cord 5 feet each. Tie their ends together into an overhand knot. Onto 7 of the strands, string 28 Green Long Magatama beads and wind the thread and beads onto a bobbin. On to the last strand string 28 Gold Long Magatama beads and wind the thread and beads onto a bobbin.
  3. Thread your knot through the hole in the middle of your Kumihimo disc and attach a weight.
  4. Line your strands up on the Kumihimo disc so that each strand is on either side of the dots as seen in the video. It does not matter where you place your gold strand.
  5. Following what you learned in the videos, braid 1/4" without any beads. Next braid 6.5" using your Long Magatamas. The clasp and cord end caps will add about 1.75" so keep this in mind. Braid with the beads until you reach your desired length. Please note that due to the thickness of the braid, your finished bracelet will be 8.5" clasp end to clasp end, stretched out but measure 6.5" on a mandrel. After you are happy with how long it is, braid another 1/4" without beads.
  6. Please watch the video on How to Tie Off and Finish Kumihimo Braid Ends. From what you learned in the video, glue your barrel cord ends to each side of the braid using E6000 glue.
  7. To attach your clasp, open an oval jump ring and link it to one of the cord ends as well as one half of your clasp. Close the jump ring. Go to the other side of the necklace and repeat this step.

Instructions retweak

Although I love the scale effect this gives the instructions should be modified as the bead amounts specified in the instructions are way not enough. It only turns out to be about 5 1/2 inches. I’ve made 3 different bracelets from these instructions and now I double the bead amounts to achieve a 7” size. Love the Magatamas and have them in all colors!
