Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since
this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.
Please note that there are some additional tools you will need for this project: a toothpick or scrap piece of wire to use as both a paint brush and a glue applicator, a ruler, and a second pair of cutters that are not your best ones (you will be cutting the metal charms with them and it could mar the pliers). Please refer to the photos often when making this necklace.
- We are going to start by making the zombie scene inside the dome. First, cut off the loops on your two zombie charms and your tombstone charm. Next, cut the legs off of one of your zombies.
- Mix up about a 3/4" ball (total) of Sage Crystal Clay. Place this clay into the bezel base. Create a gentle mound.
- Cut one strand of green seed beads. Pick up these beads and press them into the Crystal Clay mound to look like grass. See photo.
- Use your toothpick to create a little groove the length of your tombstone base in the top of the Crystal Clay mound. Press the tombstone into the clay and into this groove. Make sure it is standing upright.
- Press the feet of a zombie into the clay on one side of the tombstone. On the other side of the tombstone press the half zombie into the clay as well as his legs. If your beads make it so that you can not press the zombies into the clay, then dig a little hole using a toothpick to expose the clay and scoot aside the beads.
- Place a small amount of garnet patina onto a scrap piece of paper. Using a toothpick as a paint brush, gently dab/paint "blood splatters" on top of your tombstone, covering the area where you cut off the charm loop.
- It is time to place your dome onto the base. You will need to expose some clay along the rim of the bezel base in order to secure the glass dome. To do this, take your toothpick and insert it on the interior edge of your bezel base. Gently push the clay/beads towards the center (without disturbing your scene). Do this along the entire interior edge of the bezel base, creating a groove for which you will set your glass dome into.
- Carefully place your glass dome over your scene and into the groove you just created. Press down and let dry.
- Spread some E6000 glue on the underside of your pendant cap. Flip over and place on top of your glass dome, over the hole. Let dry.
- Use a toothpick as a paint brush again to paint more "blood splatters" using Vintaj garnet patina onto the top of the glass dome, up near the pendant cap. Let dry.
- Once your pendant has dried, open and attach a jump ring to the loop at the top of your pendant. Close the jump ring.
- Cut your chain into the following lengths: 12", 6", 6", 6", 6"
- Onto an eye pin, place 1 brass bead, 1 square silver plated bead, 1 brass bead. Create a simple wire loop after the last bead and cut off excess wire with flush cutters. Create a total of 5 of these links. (Note: This necklace ends up measuring 38" long. The photo on the bust shows only the lower portion of the necklace and 2 of these links; the bulk of the chain and the other 3 links are hidden behind the bust.)
- Take one of the links you just created and open the simple wire loop on one end (the same way you would open a jump ring) and link this to one of your 6" pieces of chain. Close the link. On the other end of the chain, connect another one of your links. Repeat this step until you have all of your 6" pieces of chain connected together with the bead links. Now connect the 12" piece of chain.
- Thread the end of the 12" piece of chain through the jump ring attached to the pendant. Now using one of your bead links, connect the end of the chain to the rest of your chain.
- Happy Halloween!
