Retired - Urban Waterfall Necklace

PROJECT N740
Designer: Julie Bean
Skill Level: Intermediate
Create a striking and modern statement piece by combining 2 colors of the same style chain. By carefully measuring and suspending equal lengths of chain from a central chain, you create a fantastic cascading waterfall effect. NOTE: The clasp used in this project has been discontinued and has been replaced with another clasp. The overall look of the bracelet will not change much, but the clasp will be slightly different than the one pictured.
Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

Note: All of the chain links are open links, meaning that they can be opened and closed just like jump rings. You are going to use this method to disconnect your chain segments and then reconnect them together in the necklace design.
  1. Take your 6 feet of gunmetal chain and measure 16 inches of it. At the 16 inch point, open the chain link (like a jump ring) and disconnect the 16 inches from the rest of the chain. This is your main necklace.
  2. Now, on your remaining length of gunmetal chain, count 10 links from one end. Open and separate out the 11th link. Just leave the 11th link in an open position like a loose jump ring and set aside the segment of 10 links. Repeat this step another 25 times.
  3. Repeat the above step with your antique brass colored chain so that you end up with 26 segments of 10 links and all those extra "jump ring" links.
  4. Take one of your antique brass chain link "jump rings" and connect it to the end chain link on one of your antique brass 10 link long segments as well as the end chain link on one of your 10 link long gunmetal chain segments. Close the "jump ring". Repeat this step with all your chain segments so that you end up with 26 segments that have the two colors of chains connected.
  5. Find the middle chain link on your 16 inch long chain segment. Using one of your gunmetal chain link "jump rings", connect it to this middle chain link as well as the end gunmetal chain link on one of your 2-tone chain segments. Close the "jump ring". Repeat this step another 12 times on one side of the chain segment you just attached and 13 times on the other side of the chain segment you just attached. NOTE: Always connect the chains on the same side edge of the 16 inch chain segment. It might help to repeatedly lay the piece flat as you are working on it.
  6. Unscrew your barrel clasp so that you have two halves.
  7. Open the loop on the end of one half of the barrel clasp (the same way you would open a jump ring) and connect this to the end chain link on one side of your necklace. Close the loop back up. Repeat this step on the other side of your necklace.
  8. All done! Enjoy!
