NOTE: As you do this braid, it is handy to have a petite crochet hook or embroidery needle nearby in case your beads want to "pop up" or become hidden in your braid. I found it helpful to check my beads every 1/2 inch to make sure they looked right. If they were at all askew, I took a tiny crochet hook and just gently pushed them into place.
- Creating a 16-warp kumihimo bracelet is not very different then creating an 8 warp bracelet. It is the exact same braiding technique, you just are filling more slots with cords and are rotating your disc 45 degrees counter clockwise vs. 90 degrees counter clockwise each turn.
- Please begin by watching the video: How to Make a Simple 8-Warp Kumihimo Braid.
- Cut 4 strands of each color of your Super Lon Earth-Toned cord mix, 52" long each. As seen in the video, wind all of the cords onto bobbins and tie a knot at the end. Place this knot through the kumihimo disc and attach a weight to it.
- Line up your cords on the kumihimo disc in the following positions:
- In the slots to the left and right of the number 32 (with the dot), place a bright green cord in each slot.
- In the slots to the left and right of the number 16 (with the dot), place a bright green cord in each slot.
- In the slots to the left and right of the number 24 (with the dot), place a dark brown cord in each slot.
- In the slots to the left and right of the number 8 (with the dot), place a dark brown cord in each slot.
- In the slots to the left and right of the number 4, place an olive green cord in each slot.
- In the slots to the left and right of the number 20, place an olive green cord in each slot.
- In the slots to the left and right of the number 12, place a taupe cord in each slot.
- In the slots to the left and right of the number 28, place a taupe cord in each slot.
- Hold the disc with the 32 facing upwards and begin to braid as shown in the 8-warp video. After you have positioned your cords properly around the 32 and 16 slots, rotate your disc 45 degrees counter clockwise so that the number 4 is now at the top (in the 8 warp braid, it would be the number 8 that was at the top). Continue braiding as normal, exactly as shown in the video, just rotate to the next set of cords and braid as normal. Braid 1 inch of 16 warp kumihimo. When you stop, make sure you can identify where you left off so that when you begin again, you will not have lost your place.
- Keep all of the cords securely in their slots, but remove the bobbin from one of the bright green cords. Place onto this cord approximately 100 Miyuki Delica size 11/0 beads in metallic green bronze. Just string them directly onto the end of the cord then scoot them up the length of the cord and rewind your bobbin. Repeat this with your other 3 bright green Super Lon cords. Do this same process with all your dark brown cords as well, this time adding Miyuki Delica size 11/0 beads in metallic bronze. You should now have 8 cords with beads strung on them and 8 cords without beads.
- Please watch the video: How to Braid Beaded Kumihimo and Make a Bracelet. You will be following the same process, just adding the beads to the braid from the strands that have them. For the non-beaded strands, just braid them as usual. There is no difference in the technique, you just have more strands overall that you are dealing with.
- If you have a small wrist, braid 11.5" of beaded kumihimo (not including the 1" of just plain braided kumihimo from earlier). This would be good for someone with a 6" wrist. If yours is closer to 7", then braid 12.5" of beaded kumihimo. You might need to add more beads to your cords, and if you do, just unwind the bobbin and add more beads, then wind the bobbin back up. When you think you have the right amount braided/beaded, and before removing your cords, carefully wrap the braid around your wrist to see if just the beaded portion will make almost 2 wraps comfortably. The cord ends and clasp will add just over 2" in length, so visualize this as you are estimating.
- When you are happy with your length, braid another 1/2" to 1" of non beaded kumihimo.
- Please watch the video: How to Tie Off and Finish Kumihimo Braid Ends.
- Based upon what you learned in the video, tie off your cord ends and attach attach a hammered and domed cord end cap with ring to each side. You want it to rest right up against the beaded portion of your braid but what you should be cutting and tying off is the non-beaded section. Let dry.
- Open a 6mm jump ring and link it to the ring on the top of one of your cord end caps and also the loop at the base of your floral toggle clasp. Close the jump ring.
- Open another 6mm jump ring and loop it through the hole at the top of your Austrian crystal crystal pear pendant in fern green taupe blend. Before closing this jump ring, also link it to the jump ring that was attached in the previous step. Close the jump ring.
- Open another 6mm jump ring and link it to the other cord end cap. Close this jump ring. Open another jump ring and link it to the one just attached as well as your toggle bar. Close the jump ring. Try on the bracelet. If it is too tight, add another jump ring or two to the toggle bar.
- Enjoy!
