Retired - Moonstruck Earrings

PROJECT E673
Designer: Julie Bean
Skill Level: Intermediate
These earrings would be perfect for an evening dance in the moonlight with the stars sparkling above. The Vintaj Arte Metal pendants are striking and dramatic with rich purple Crystal Clay and Austrian crystal chatons set into them.

Please watch the tutorial on How to Use Crystal Clay before starting this project. Also, remember to double the directions below to make your matched set of earrings.
  1. Start by using the Vintaj relief block to gently sand the top surface of all your Vintaj Arte Metal pendants. The more you sand, the more silver will appear from beneath the black.
  2. Following what you learned in the video, mix up a ball of dark purple Crystal clay about the size of a small gumball (1/2" diameter). Flatten this ball so that you have something resembling the size, shape, and thickness of a US quarter. Carefully sandwich this clay piece between the two wrong sides of your Vintaj Arte Metal Etrusia ringlet pendants. Touching only the metal, press together until some clay squeezes out the middle hole and the sides. Try to not touch the middle hole clay but run your finger nail along the outside circumference of the pendants to remove the excess clay.
  3. Choose the side that looks the best and place Austrian Crystal chatons, size pp14 in black diamond in a circular pattern into the middle hole clay and also in the clay which sticks out of the openwork design down along the bottom edge. You can use the beeswax covered pick which comes with you Crystal Clay to apply the chatons. I also took my finger and pressed along the backside of the clay in the hole so that it puffed out a bit as I was working.
  4. Let dry overnight.
  5. Test to see if those chatons along the bottom edge will securely stay in place with the clay alone, there is not much space. If they appear at all loose, gently take your fingernail and get under their edge. Lift up to pop them off and then place a dab of E6000 glue in the hole left behind. Set the chaton back into the glue and let dry.
  6. Open the loop at the base of your Vintaj Arte Metal earring hook and slip it onto the hoop at the top of your pendant earring. Close the loop back up.
  7. All done!
