Retired - An Owl in the Forest Earrings

PROJECT E613
Designer: Julie Bean
Skill Level: Beginner
So 'charming', these little owls stand watch amongst the forest leaves. Gilder's Paste was used to color the owls and the leaves, it really adds dimension and warmth to the set.
Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

  1. Remember to double these instructions to make your matched set of earrings!
  2. Gilder's Paste is a wonderful way of coloring a lot of your jewelry components. For this project, we will just be using our fingers and a paper towel to apply the paste.
  3. Dip the tip of one of your fingers lightly into the African Bronze Gilder's paste ( a little goes a long way). Brush your finger over the top of the Vintaj Arte Metal leaves, coloring their tops. You can utilize one of two techniques for this. If you want a lighter touch like I did in the photo, just brush over the top of the raised design with your finger and set aside to dry. If you want more color, then really press your paste-coated finger into the Arte Metal charm and allow the paste to go into all the recesses of the design. Then, take a paper towel and wipe off the excess, exposing the dark original color on the raised area.
  4. Next, wipe off your finger and dip it into the Antique Gold Gilder's Paste. Using your finger, smudge your Gilder's Paste into the detailed areas of your owl charm. Take your paper towel and wipe off excess. Next, dip your finger back into the African Bronze color and brush it along the owl's wing. Set aside to dry.
  5. For the next steps, just make sure all your charms are facing the same direction as each other when you attach them.
  6. Cut a chain length that is 4 links long. Open a link at one end the same way you would open a jump ring and insert the hoop at the top of the owl charm. Close the link.
  7. Carefully open the 3rd link and insert the loop at the top of one of the leaf charms. Close the link back up.
  8. Open the loop at the bottom of your french ear wire (the same way you would open a jump ring) and insert the 4th (which is the end) chain link as well as the loop at the top of your leaf charm. Close the loop back up.
  9. Have a "hoot" wearing these earrings!
