Be sure to wear safety goggles when distressing the pieces for this necklace.
  1. To begin, watch the instructional video: How to Expose and Distress a Pocket Watch. Use the method demonstrated in the video to prepare an antique brass mechanical pocket watch pendant.
  2. Use a pair of flush cutters to clip the pins off of the backs of the watch faces. Then decide how you want to arrange the watch faces and the pocket watch. It's really a matter of preference, and it's kind of a free form design, so just place them where you want them in a bib sort of shape. Be sure to keep the winding mechanism of your watch accessible. I made mine solid, with no gaps between the faces. My bib measures about 6" wide and 3.5" tall, for reference.
  3. Next, distress all of your stampings, gears, and bead caps. Very carefully use a needle file where desired to make a deeper scratched or worn appearance. Then use a Vintaj relief block on all of these pieces pretty extensively.
  4. Remove the upper layers in your piece and glue your watch faces together where they meet, starting with the bottom layer and moving up. Allow your glue to set slightly as you go, but not to dry all the way.
  5. Now slide your gears and stampings into your piece wherever you want them, adding glue where necessary. Place one of the larger gears on each top end to use for hanging the necklace (see photo for placement reference). Glue on your bead caps where you like them. Then let all of the glue dry thoroughly before continuing.
  6. Use the hole punching pliers to punch a hole in the edge of the solid gear that is attached at the top of the bib for hanging. If you have used two solid gears, they'll both need holes. If you have used two spoked gears, you won't need to punch holes.
  7. Cut two 7" lengths of large antique brass rolo chain.
  8. Use a 7mm, 18 gauge antique brass jump ring to hang one piece of chain from each of the gears at the top of the bib (see photo for reference).
  9. Use a 6mm, 18 gauge antique brass jump ring to attach one end of an antique brass spring ring clasp to each free end of the chain.
