Retired - Vamp Noir Necklace

PROJECT N3013
Designer: Karlin Jones
Skill Level: Beginner
Show off your Halloween spirit by making this striking bat necklace. This piece incorporates a stamping shaped like a bat with its wings stretched out for flight. Using black, red and purple patinas, it is transformed into a unique piece of jewelry.
Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

You will need a small paint brush for this project as well as some type of non-stick work mat or a work space that you can get paint on. This necklace measures approximately 18 long. Adjust your chain length for a shorter or longer necklace.
  1. Begin by watching the video on How to Use Vintaj Patinas and Glaze.
  2. Take your bat stamping and using your Eurotool EuroPunch, punch three holes; one near the edge of the left wing (about 2cm from the edge), one near the edge of the right wing (about 2cm from the edge) and one at the bottom of the center portion of the bat (about 1 cm away from the edge). Make sure the location of the holes you punch on the wings are symmetrical so the chain hangs from the same spot on each wing.
  3. Next, based upon what you learned in the video, paint a thin layer of onyx patina over the front side of your bat stamping. Let dry. Take your red and purple patinas and paint by dabbing. Let dry. Now paint a wash of onyx (1 part onyx patina to 3 parts glaze) over the bat. You want there to be an uneven appearance to the wash, having it thicker in some areas and lighter in others.
  4. Once your stamping is dry (but do not let it sit for very long, you want it just barely dry), take your relief block and using the side, start sanding the raised areas of your stamping to show off the detail. Set the stamping aside for now.
  5. Next take your Czech glass chain and measure an 18 length.
  6. Using a jump ring, connect one end of your chain to one of the holes on the bat's wing that you created previously. Repeat this step on the other side of your necklace with the other end of your chain and another jump ring. Since your chain consists of simple wire loops connected together, you can open and close these loops just like jump rings.
  7. Find the middle point of your necklace and open the simple wire loops of your chain at that point to create two halves to your necklace.
  8. Link onto one side of your chain a jump ring, close the simple wire loop. On the other side of your necklace, connect the chain to a clasp.
  9. You are now ready for the finishing touch! Take a head pin and string it through a black diamond bead. Create a simple wire loop using your round nose pliers. Snip off any excess wire using your flush cutters.
  10. Next, open a jump ring and slide it through the simple wire loop you created in the step above and slide it through the hole you made on the center portion of the bat. Close the jump ring.
  11. Your necklace is now ready.
