Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

  1. If you are not yet familiar with how to use ICE resin, please watch our instructional video on the subject before proceeding.
  2. Mix your resin in a disposable plastic cup, using a popsicle stick. You will only be needing a small amount, unless you are making more than one pair of earrings. Mix your resin well, eliminating all striations. Shake up your bottle of dye. Add the tiniest amount of dye to your mixture (possibly just dip a toothpick in the dye, adding more as necessary) and mix that into the resin until there are no striations. Set resin and dye mixture aside for five minutes to allow for excess air bubbles to rise to the surface and pop. (OPTIONAL: go to your local craft store and purchase some fine, iridescent blue glitter. Add just a tiny bit of the glitter to your resin and mix thoroughly.)
  3. While you are waiting for your resin to set, cut a strip of wide, clear packing tape that is about a foot long. A few inches apart, place your mirror-image matte silver fairy wings onto the sticky side of the tape. Burnish the tape down against the metal using your fingernail.
  4. Very carefully, and using a popsicle stick or a toothpick as an aid, drip your resin over the surface of each fairy wing, making sure not to cover the loop at the top where your earring hook will go. Do not use too much resin, or else it will bubble over the side of the wing.
  5. Set aside in a warm, relatively dust free area. Allow the resin to cure for at least twenty-four hours before trying to move it.
  6. Once your resin has fully cured, carefully and slowly remove the wings from the packing tape. You may find that the tape has left a sticky residue. If that is the case, use a soft cloth and an adhesive removing liquid such as Goo Gone to eliminate the residue. Be sure to not rub the resin too much, as it may scratch or become cloudy.
