Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

You will need some tape and an applicator for your glue. This bracelet measures 8.5 inches, you will easily be able to make it longer or shorter in the instructions below. The clasp will add approximately 1" to your length, so for a 8.5" bracelet, you will have 7.5" of braiding and a 1" clasp.
  1. Take out your silk ribbons in Amethyst, Raspberry Pink, Mustard Yellow, Plum, Light Grey, Light Green, Sage Green and Cerulean Blue. These will be the 8 colors used in your kumihimo bracelet.
  2. Next, please watch the video: How to Make a Simple 8-Warp Kumihimo Braid Bracelet.
  3. You will follow the same techniques as you learned in the video, just replacing the satin rattail cord with your silky ribbon.
  4. Tie your ends into a simple knot, thread it through the middle of the disk, and attach a weight to the end.
  5. Line up your ribbons on your kumihimo disk so the ribbons are placed in this order: Amethyst is to the left and Raspberry Pink is to the right of the 32, Mustard Yellow is to the left and Light Green is to the right of the 16. Plum is to the left and Light Grey is to the right of the 8 and Sage Green is to the left and Cerulean Blue is to the right of the 24.
  6. Braid as long of a bracelet that you want (taking into account that the clasp will add an inch). Once you have finished braiding, take your weight off of the tail and clamp it over the strands that you just braided to hold them in place. Remove your braid and strands from the disk.
  7. Set aside your braid while you watch the video: How to Tie Off and Finish Kumihimo Braid Ends .
  8. Take your braid and measure the length that you want for your bracelet, starting at the knot. Based upon what you learned in the video above, place a piece of tape over the braid near the knot and then also at the interval on the braid that is the length you want for your bracelet. Finish off your ends now as seen in the video and attach your ribbon end caps with glue. Let dry.
  9. (Optional: Set aside two inch lengths of the silky ribbon ends you cut off to use as a decorative accent. Refer to the photo.)
  10. Open one of the jump rings that comes with the clasp set and attach it to the loop on one of your cord ends as well as one half of your toggle clasp. Close the jump ring. Repeat this step on the other side of your bracelet.
  11. Take your extra ribbon lengths (I chose three: Plum, Cerulean Blue and Raspberry Pink) and tie a simple knot through one of the jump rings on one side of your clasp set.
  12. Enjoy!
